A field based architectural theory programme
2nd-9th May 2020

Since 2016, the School of Environment and Architecture (SEA) has been running a research cluster on South Asian Architecture and Urbanism under the aegis of SEA-Studio, the research wing of SEA.  Debates on South Asian architecture and urbanism in this region have largely been structured through questions around identity, informality, regionalism, poverty, outcomes of capitalist and neoliberal economies, and even as classicizing impulses trying to reclaim a past. This research module aims at developing conceptual categories and frameworks through which a new critical understanding of architecture and urbanism in South Asia may be formulated.

As part of this programme SEA has initiated a series of traveling courses, two of which will be conducted each year. This course intends to orient its participants to the various tendencies in South Asian Architecture, often overlooked in conventional studies of the region. The field becomes an important vector through which architectural theory is repositioned in this programme. The first course shall be held in Nepal this year during the first week of May. We will spend 7 days in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lumbini, studying various architectural and urban typologies in the region through the particularities in spatial tendencies. The course includes a series of walks and lectures by experts, along with rigorous readings and discussions coordinated by Rupali Gupte, Anuj Daga and Ipshita Karmakar.

The programme is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students of architecture. Independent researchers interested in architecture and urbanism are welcome to apply.
